The History of the ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened in CS2 (CS:GO)

The design of the ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened traces back to Valve's in-house CS:GO weapon finish designers who sought to create a series of steel heat-treated finishes for knives. The Case Hardened finish made its debut in August 2013 with the release of the CS:GO Arms Deal Update, marking the first time players could obtain these distinctive knives through weapon cases.

In early competitive Counter-Strike, especially during CS:GO Majors, the ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened in CS2 (CS:GO) gained substantial recognition as high-profile streamers and pro players would unbox and flaunt them. This led to massive hype, particularly around highly blue-dominant patterns, sometimes referred to as "Blue Gems." Such patterns became legendary after notable unboxings and trades circulated throughout the community.

As CS2 launched, the CS2 (CS:GO) ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened retained its top-tier desirability, now boasting improved visual fidelity and animations. Its presence in community and professional inventories keeps it in the spotlight and continues to influence the market value and community admiration.

How Rare Is the ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened?

The rarity of ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened in CS2 (CS:GO) is classified as Covert, the rarest knife tier available for standard drops. Players can obtain this skin from weapon cases such as the Operation Breakout Weapon Case, where the chances of unboxing a butterfly knife are extremely low—estimated at less than 0.26% per case.

CS2 (CS:GO) ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened was never removed from drop pools, ensuring its ongoing, albeit rare, availability. No Souvenir versions exist, so its supply depends exclusively on case unboxings. Its popularity remains high due to its unique patterns, especially those with heavy blue hues, considered exceedingly rare and valuable. This, combined with its scarcity, has propelled its status as one of the most sought-after knives in the game.

★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened Wear Levels and Conditions

Pattern description
The ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened finish features a steel blade with randomized blue, gold, and purple areas, created through a case-hardening process. Each knife's pattern is unique, leading to a wide variety of visual styles and rare pattern IDs, with full-blue "Blue Gem" variants standing out as the most valuable.

Pattern difference
No two ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened have the same pattern index, making certain patterns—especially blue-dominated ones—exponentially more desirable.

Effect of float
The ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened float value ranges from 0.00 to 1.00, enabling availability in all wear levels. Low float (closer to 0.00) preserves the vibrancy and minimal wear, while higher float dulls the finish and increases visible wear.

Skin Features
The CS2 (CS:GO) ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened is classified as Covert and features both standard and StatTrak™ versions, which count confirmed kills.

Factory New
★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened factory new has a float value between 0.00 and 0.07. These are pristine, with minimal surface imperfections and the most vibrant colors. This wear commands the highest prices, especially for rare blue patterns, sometimes reaching several thousand dollars.

Minimal Wear
★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened minimal wear displays only slight abrasions, with float values between 0.07 and 0.15. It maintains most of the finish's brilliance and is just slightly more affordable than Factory New.

Field-Tested
★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened field tested has visible scratches and a slightly faded color palette. It retains its pattern appeal but at a more accessible price point, float values range from 0.15 to 0.38.

Well-Worn
★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened well worn loses additional vibrancy, featuring more patina and pronounced scratches. Its float range spans from 0.38 to 0.45, and this grade is popular for budget-conscious buyers.

Battle-Scarred
★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened Battle Scarred knives (float 0.45+) show heavy wear, significant discoloration, and deeper scratches yet can be surprisingly expensive if the pattern is highly blue.

StatTrak™ versions
StatTrak™ ★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened and its various wears record kill counts and typically command a premium over non-StatTrak™ versions, especially in Factory New and rare patterns. StatTrak™ versions, especially Factory New and Minimal Wear "Blue Gem" knives, are among the highest-priced collectibles in Counter-Strike.

★ Butterfly Knife | Case Hardened Price & Market Value
